The Human and the Cell

    The point of this article is to exemplify the harm cell phones do to society. The three main points of this article is about how using a cell phone is a self centered activity, a distraction to the user and a distraction to others around a user. Texting or calling when there is someone right beside a person, makes the other person feel like they are not worth said person’s time. In response to these electronic users “drive-through pharmacies and fast-food outlets in the U.S. start(ed) to refuse to serve digital multi-taskers” because workers want their job to be done more conveniently. The person on the other side of the phone is allegedly more important than a worker trying to fulfill the phone operator’s needs. This is a guaranteed way to get spittle in a burger. When people are doing something for someone, a worker wants the full divided attention of the consumer so that the order won’t be wrong. Furthermore, it slows the rest of the customers up so in turn it is rude to everyone in the line up. Cell phones are distracting to the users of the device. For example, “one woman so preoccupied with her cell she didn’t even notice the sirens flagging her down” so she continued on driving after committing a crime. Accidents and decisions of better judgment are flawed because the phone is more interesting. You can get anything on new smart phones. The distractions continue every month when new apps appear. Plus, it is invigorating to get a text because it creates a feeling of self worth and makes the will to look at the phone increase. Finally, phones are distracting to everyone around. When overhearing a phone conversation “we don’t know what is being said on the other end of the conversation, it’s distracting because we’re trying to predict what the person is saying,” because human nature is curiosity.  Humans want to hear juicy gossip because it makes life more thrilling to know the he said, she said nonsense.  It can be just the light off the phone’s screen or the annoying ticking of keys being punched that drive bystanders off the wall and make it hard for people to concentrate. I personally believe that the author of this news clipping is a hundred percent accurate with their statements about the harms of cell phone use.

   Personally I believe that cell phones should be allowed to be used everywhere. If you are locked in a house with a killer it is easy to call for help from these devices. If you didn't you would be searching for a land line and the killer can more easily locate you because you are no longer in a hiding place. Those Halloween movies would have been way shorter if the characters had phones. Furthermore, if you got in an accident where you are all alone in the middle of the woods a cell maybe your only hope of being saved. The cells signals give searchers the”basic area to cover based on that person’s cell phone’s signals," so instead of combing the land for a missing person their location is slightly known. If there is no help then a person can take a chance with the rednecks out in the bush. However, there are a few places where using the phone should be prohibited. Over "24,000 involved reports of cell phone use as a distraction," have caused an accident. Phones should be illegal for driving completely. However, police should not enforce the no phone use in drive thrus or sitting in a car with the keys in the ignition. Sadly, some people have been fined. Besides that users take their own risk when using their phone. They are responsible for there own actions when using a phone. You may not get a girlfriend because you are on the phone all the time but that is the price you have to pay. If personal information is overheard that is your own issue. The idea of cell phone blockers can be a promising perspective in schools or movie theatres if done properly. These devices should only be put into operation when class is in session or the movie has begun. Sitting in a movie theatre is very uninteresting so you should be allowed to use your phone until the movie starts. Basically, the annoyance of cell phones is just as bad as the geek in the back row ruining the ending.  It is better off to enjoy the phone because you can't silence the movie fanatic. Cells are good and bad, if humans used them properly this blog post would never have to be written.
